About City Market

Built in 1755, Savannah's famous City Market has been known as the heart of Savannah for centuries. In the beginning, City Market was where residents went shopping for groceries, services and other goods. Today, visitors and locals flock to City Market for popular restaurants, creative art spaces, the Prohibition Museum and their fantastic speakeasy, unique shopping and so much more.

Asian grocery stores and supermarkets stock ingredients, snacks and household goods that general American supermarkets often do not carry, organized by category rather than by country of origin in most stores. Produce and live or fresh seafood sections are usually at the back or side of the store, and weekend mornings bring the largest crowds and freshest restock. Many larger Asian supermarkets include a hot deli or food court counter selling prepared meals by the pound or as fixed plates, useful for a quick lunch while shopping. Labels are frequently bilingual or untranslated, so store staff can usually help locate a specific ingredient if you ask. Cash, cards and mobile pay are all commonly accepted at larger chains; smaller specialty shops may be cash-preferred.

The main office building says on the outside that there are bathrooms inside. It is only after you go inside, discover that they are upstairs, then walk to the other end of the building and then down a short hallway are you informed that it is for card holders only. This is grotesquely and disgustingly inaccessible to people with bowel disorders. Literally felt like I was being taunted.

Fun place to walk around and look in shops. Parking is a little bit of a hassle. Great shirt souvenirs to grab with several food and drink establishments.

It’s an excellent place to walk, relax, socialize, eat, have a drink, and listen to live music outdoors. I loved it! ❀️

City Market is one of my favorite places in Savannah, and it feels especially meaningful with America’s 250th anniversary approaching. This district traces its roots back to the late 1700s, when it served as Savannah’s public market for farmers, merchants, and shoppers. While the original market buildings are gone, the area still feels like a gathering place for the city. The string lights, historic streets, local shops, galleries, restaurants, and live music create an atmosphere that is both nostalgic and timeless. It is easy to imagine generations of Savannahians coming here to meet friends, do business, celebrate holidays, and enjoy the city. Whether you’re grabbing a drink, browsing local art, listening to music, or simply taking an evening stroll under the lights, City Market captures a little bit of what makes Savannah special. As America approaches its 250th birthday, places like this are a reminder that some communities have been part of the story almost from the very beginning. Minus one star for occasional downtown chaos.

Fun little market area. Several restaurants, shops, gallerias and more. Usually has live music in the evenings. We always hit Savannah Candy Kitchen for treats to bring home. If there making pralines, grab a free sample
